Some of you might have read my life update post on Monday, if you did then you’ll know that for the last 2 months I’ve been working two retail jobs for two different companies. To give you a bit of background I’ve been working for Superdrug as their cosmetic expert and Next as a Home Sales Consultant. I took both roles on because neither one would give me full time hours and I really wanted to maximize my earning potential with the time I had. This wasn’t the easiest of commitments to make especially as the two places were about 20 minutes away from each other and I had days where I’d work a shift at both. I found that I got myself into a pattern and picked up habits that certainly made it easier. I thought I’d share these with you today for any of you students looking to works their butts off this summer. 

  1. Honesty – I only had set hours for Next at Superdrug, because it was so close to home I said I’d work any hours Monday to Friday. So when I got those hours through I went to my manager and explained that I had another job and I couldn’t work those hours. It’s important to be honest with your boss’ and managers because they are there to help and will be more understanding if your’re honest and polite. Especially being young, I found you’ll be taken more seriously if you stand up for yourself and approach things in a grown up manor. Act like the person you want to be treated as. 
  2. Staying healthy – I had a lot of 14 hour days, doing 6 hour shifts at each place and then travel in between. It’s important to stay energized and to look after yourself too. The best way of doing that is to go back to basics, gets lots of sleep, make sure you’re drinking enough water and eat healthier. Sure a chocolate bar and a packet of crisps is an easy lunch to grab and go but when you come to eat it, it won’t fill you up in the long run or give you any energy. My go to lunch was always a piece of chicken, some veggies and a cereal bar, or a sandwich if I didn’t have much time. Things like Go-Ahead bars are great for breaks because they’re good for you and they fill you up without being a million calories. I always had one in my bag just in case. Ask if you can bring a bottle of water onto the shop floor with you, that’s the best way to keep yourself hydrated and  it’ll make you more alert too. 
  3. Efficiency – Especially with time, you’ll very quickly learn how to best use your time and whats the quickest/best way of getting things done. I found that when my parents couldn’t take me to work and I got the bus (I have the most supportive parents in the world so that wasn’t often) I studied the bus timetables religiously to make sure I could get to work on time but not waste time standing at bus stops early in the morning. Also when my shift was over I made sure I was prompt leaving, and when I was home I’d spend my time relaxing, catching up with family. You might have noticed a distinct lack of posts over the last 6-8 weeks and that is purely down to the amount of hours I was doing at work.

So there’s my top tips! It’s not easy but it’s definitely do-able if you’re clever about it.
